Winter Hair Survival Guide: How to Fight Dryness and Static in Reno

10/28/2025

Hey friends! ❄️ Let’s talk winter hair — because if you’re anything like me, the cold, dry air in Reno can turn even the healthiest strands into a frizzy, flyaway mess. Between outdoor winds, indoor heating, and our naturally dry climate, your hair can start feeling brittle, flat, and completely unmanageable. But don’t worry — I’ve got all the tips and insider tricks you need to survive the season with soft, shiny, static-free hair.

What’s Really Happening
When Hair Becomes Static when your hair is dry, it loses moisture — and that dryness allows an electrical charge to build up. Every time you pull off a winter hat, brush your hair, or toss on a cozy sweater, friction transfers electrons to your strands. Because Reno’s air is so dry, that charge has nowhere to go, and your hair ends up with the same electrical charge from root to tip. Just like magnets, those strands repel each other, and suddenly, you’ve got static and flyaways everywhere.
Static is different from frizz — frizz happens with humidity, static happens with dryness. So when our heaters are running full blast inside and cold air hits outside, your hair’s natural balance is thrown completely off.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Hydration is the secret to calm, smooth winter hair. Start with a hydrating shampoo and conditioner designed for dry hair. Focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends — that’s where your hair needs moisture most.
Milbon's Reawaken line offers shine and hydration for youthful, manageable hair. Long-lasting lather technology in this timeless care shampoo offers gentle cleansing while activating our advanced Renewing Technology to restore youthful shine, hydration, and manageability.

Professional Help:
The Milbon 5-Week Moisture Treatment.

If your hair feels especially brittle or dull this season, the Milbon 5-Week Moisture Treatment is one of our favorite in-salon services at Sage Hair Studio. It’s designed specifically for dry, damaged hair — perfect for Reno’s winter air.
Inside the hair shaft, this treatment strengthens fragile strands, rebuilding the internal structure for lasting resilience. On the surface, it seals the cuticle and restores hydration, leaving hair smoother, shinier, and much less prone to static. After a full five-week treatment cycle, most clients notice their hair feels softer, stronger, and more manageable, even on the windiest days.

Or try a Weekly Boost at Home:
Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask

Between salon visits, give your hair an extra dose of love with the Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask. Winter wind and low humidity can weaken hair bonds and leave your ends feeling dry and fragile — and this mask helps reverse that damage. Olaplex No.8 works on a molecular level to repair broken bonds, rebuild strength, and infuse deep hydration back into the hair. It’s packed with nourishing ingredients that smooth frizz, add shine, and make hair feel noticeably softer in just one use. We love it because it’s lightweight enough for all hair types — it won’t weigh your strands down — and it leaves your hair feeling luxuriously silky. Use it once a week in place of your conditioner: apply mid-length to ends, leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse. Pair it with your regular moisturizing routine or after your Milbon treatments for an even deeper repair and moisture boost.

Protect Your Hair from Friction
Static thrives on friction, so make small swaps in your daily routine. Switch to silk or satin pillowcases, and reach for silk-lined hats instead of wool beanies. These smooth fabrics help prevent snagging and breakage. Even changing out your hair ties for silk or satin scrunchies makes a difference — they glide instead of tug. Choose the Right tool, plastic brushes generate static, so switch to boar bristle brushes or wooden combs that distribute oils and minimize charge.

Don’t Forget Your Environment
Sometimes it’s not your products — it’s your air. Reno’s indoor heating can make your home feel like a desert for your hair. A humidifier adds moisture back into your environment and helps both your skin and your hair stay hydrated. And of course, drink plenty of water — hydration from the inside out really does show in your strands.

Quick Winter Hair Tips for Static-Free Strands
  • Hydrate with moisturizing shampoo, conditioner from Milbon's Renewing or Moisture lines
  • Protect your moisture barrier with a leave-in conditioner. Our favorite is UNITE 7 Seconds Detangler.
  • Strengthen and smooth with the Milbon 5-Week Moisture Treatment — your winter hair savior. Or try an at home treatment such as a weekly deep-conditioning masks from Olaplex No.8.
  • Use natural bristle or wooden brushes to reduce friction.
  • Sleep on silk pillowcases and wear silk-lined hats.
  • Add moisture to your air with a humidifier.
  • Avoid over-washing and excessive heat styling.

At Sage Hair Studio in Reno Nevada, we love helping our clients find the right balance of hydration and repair all winter long. Whether you’re booking a Milbon treatment, picking up your favorite Olaplex home mask, or just need some expert product advice, we’ve got your winter hair covered — literally. Come see us and let’s keep your hair soft, shiny, and static-free this season. 💖

How I Saved My White Shirt from a Makeup Disaster at My Reno Hair Salon

Working at Sage Hair Studio, a busy Reno hair salon, means things can go from chill to chaos real quick. The other day, I was prepping for a client and feeling pretty good—until I looked down and saw it:
Makeup. All. Over. My. White. Linen. Shirt.
Not a tiny smudge either. I’m talking full-on “did you faceplant into your makeup bag?” levels of disaster. And of course, this happened literally five minutes before my client was scheduled to walk in.

The Panic Move That Made It Worse. I ran to the back like my life depended on it. Grabbed soap and water. Blotted furiously. And… bad move. The makeup stain bled out and left one of those telltale rings—making it way worse than it started. There was no hiding this.

So I threw on a sweater (in July, in Nevada—yep) and smiled my way through the appointment. But the second I had a moment, I remembered something I saw on Instagram: the Windex stain hack.

Enter: The Windex Hack (Yes, Really)I laid my shirt flat on the back table at the salon, grabbed some Windex from under the sink, and sprayed the stained area generously. I used the blot-and-twist method—press, twist, lift—and watched in total shock as the color started lifting out. I repeated this three times. Each round pulled more pigment out of the fabric. This stuff actually works!

No Toothbrush? No Problem (Salon Stylist Improv)At this point, I wanted to gently scrub the area—but no toothbrush in sight. But hey, I’m a hairstylist in Reno… you know what I do have? A clean tint brush. Yep, the same one we use for applying hair color. I swirled the brush around the stain and gently dabbed the area. It loosened the last of the residue without damaging the fabric.

Finishing Touches: Stain Remover + Salon Washer To be extra sure I got it all, I grabbed a cotton pad and my trusty Tressa Color Stain Remover—a staple at Sage Hair Studio. I dabbed it over the damp area one last time, then tossed the shirt into our salon washing machine for a quick cycle. And when it came out? Spotless. No more ring, no trace of makeup. It looked like nothing had ever happened.

Why This Hack is a Lifesaver for Busy Stylists
When our clients ask for our signature Lived in color, we could be foiling a client for over an hour. We have to think fast we don’t always have time to change outfits or run home when stains happen. That is why I’m a big fan of quick, professional salon hacks that actually work. Try this hack the next time you need to remove a stain!

What You’ll Need for This Stain Hack:
  • Windex (or any blue window cleaner)
  • Cloth or paper towel for blotting
  • Clean tint brush (or soft toothbrush if you have one)
  • Tressa Color Stain Remover (or any laundry stain remover)
  • Access to a washing machine (or hand wash if needed)

Pro Tip from a Reno Hairstylist
If you're a stylist—or just someone who wears white way too confidently—keep a little emergency stain kit at work. Mine now includes Windex, cotton pads, and my go-to stain remover.
Whether you're a fellow hairstylist in Reno or just someone dealing with makeup mishaps on the regular, trust me: this hack is gold.

Why We’re Loving MILBON at Sage Hair Studio

If you've been in my chair lately, you’ve probably heard me talk about MILBON—and if you haven’t yet, let me tell you why we brought this line into the studio. MILBON is a treatment-based product line that’s really built around the in-salon experience. It’s not something you’ll find in big-box stores, and that’s honestly part of the magic. The idea is that your stylist (hi, that’s me!) helps you figure out exactly what your hair needs, and then guides you into the right products that actually support your goals—whether that’s moisture, strength, smoothness, or all of the above. Having this line exclusive to salons is a win-win: you get expert advice and real results, and it supports small studios like ours by keeping the experience personal and professional.

What really stood out to me about MILBON is the science behind it. This line has been researched and developed in Japan for decades, and they’ve figured out how to treat hair from the inside out. They use something called SSVR-Silk technology (I know, sounds intense), which basically repairs the inner structure of the hair where damage starts—not just coating it with shine. That’s why the results feel so real and last longer than most products I’ve used before. It’s ideal for anyone who deals with color damage, heat styling, or even just naturally dry or coarse hair. I love that this line is all about building real health in your hair, not just a temporary fix. So next time you’re in, ask me to show you a few of the MILBON options—I promise there’s something that’ll match exactly what your hair’s been asking for.

Now, let’s talk about the actual product lines, because there’s truly something for everyone:

🌿 MILBON Shampoo & Conditioner Lines – What Sets Them Apart
Moisture Line – Perfect if your hair’s feeling dry or brittle. It’s super hydrating without being heavy, and it’s amazing for color-treated or naturally coarse hair. It gives you that soft, smooth feeling right away.
Repair Line – This one’s for the overachievers: bleach, heat, color—you name it. It dives deep into your hair and helps rebuild what’s been broken down. Think of it as strength training for your hair.
Smoothing Line – If your hair is frizzy, rough, or unmanageable, this is your go-to. What’s cool is that it comes in versions for fine, medium, and coarse hair, so it never feels too much or too little.
Volumizing Line – For my fine-haired clients who want bounce without buildup. It lifts at the root and keeps hair light and touchable. Great if your hair tends to go flat halfway through the day.
Blonde Plus Line – Designed to protect and tone lightened hair. It helps maintain brightness while keeping hair soft and healthy, which is huge if you’re living that blonde life.
Curl Line – Enhances and defines natural curls and waves while fighting frizz. It’s gentle and keeps curls bouncy without feeling crunchy or weighed down.
Scalp Line – If your scalp gets oily, dry, or just needs a reset, this line balances everything out. A healthy scalp means healthier hair—it’s often overlooked, but makes a big difference.
Reawaken Line – Focused on aging or thinning hair, this line stimulates and revitalizes to encourage fullness and strength from the root. Clients who are noticing changes in their hair density really love this one.

And if you’re ready to go even deeper, we’ve started offering MILBON’s professional 5-week treatments in the studio—and they are so good. There are two options we’re offering right now: Repair and Smoothing.
  • Repair Treatment is amazing if you’re dealing with breakage, split ends, or that fried feeling from bleach or hot tools. It helps rebuild the internal structure of your hair, adding strength, bounce, and softness. It’s honestly one of the best ways to nurse your hair back to health.
  • Smoothing Treatment is your secret weapon against frizz and rough texture. It seals down the cuticle, making hair feel silky and look glassy without feeling greasy or weighed down. It’s especially helpful in humid months (hello, summer).
Both treatments are done in the salon and last about five weeks—so you’ll feel that smooth, healthy difference between visits. Think of them as facials, but for your hair.

One of the biggest reasons I was drawn to MILBON is how well it supports color-treated hair—and I’m not just talking about basic color. Whether you’re rocking a soft, lived-in highlight, a bright custom blonde, or going through a full-on grey color correction, this line helps keep your color looking fresh and your hair feeling strong. The treatments and at-home products are designed to protect the hair’s structure, which means less fading, fewer split ends, and way more shine. I’ve seen a real difference in how color holds and wears between appointments since using MILBON. If you’ve invested in a color service at Sage Hair Studio, this is one of the best ways to protect that investment and keep your hair looking just as gorgeous in week five as it did on day one. Let’s talk next time you’re in the studio. Your healthiest hair might be closer than you think.

7 Tips for Faster Hair Growth

We’ve all been there—waiting for our hair to grow out after a big chop or dreaming of longer, fuller locks. While there’s no magic solution for overnight growth, there are proven ways to support your hair’s natural growth cycle and get those strands growing strong. At Sage Hair Studio, we believe healthy hair starts with the right habits. Here are seven tips to help speed up the process and keep your hair looking its best.

1. Feed Your Hair from the Inside Out
Hair growth starts with what you put into your body. Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals—especially biotin, zinc, vitamin D, and protein—can help support stronger, faster growth. Think leafy greens, eggs, salmon, nuts, and whole grains. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water!

2. Scalp Care is a Must (Try a Scalp Facial!)
A healthy scalp creates the perfect environment for hair to grow. Try giving yourself a gentle scalp massage a few times a week—this boosts blood flow to the follicles and encourages growth. But if you really want to take your scalp game to the next level, consider treating yourself to a scalp facial. These treatments deeply cleanse the scalp, removing buildup from products, oils, and pollution that can block hair follicles. They also stimulate circulation, helping boost hair growth. One of our favorite businesses that specializes in this is Rooted Wellness, Scalp therapy by Dallas. She focus on scalp health through professional-grade treatments that not only feel amazing but also deliver real results. Think of it as skincare—for your scalp. Just like your face needs regular care to stay healthy, your scalp does too.

3. Keep It Clean (But Not Too Clean)
Washing your hair regularly helps keep your scalp free of buildup, but over washing can strip away natural oils that your hair needs to stay healthy. Aim to wash your hair 2–3 times a week, and use a sulfate-free shampoo to cleanse gently without drying out your strands. One important tip to keep in mind is to avoid applying conditioner directly to your scalp. Conditioner is meant to nourish and hydrate the ends of your hair, but if you apply it to your scalp, it can lead to product buildup, clogged hair follicles, and even scalp irritation. This can interfere with your hair's natural growth cycle and may even contribute to thinning or slower growth over time. Instead, focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, where moisture is most needed.

4. Trim the Dead Ends
It might seem counterintuitive, but trimming your hair every 6–8 weeks actually helps it grow faster in the long run. Split ends can travel up the hair shaft, causing breakage and making your hair look thinner and shorter than it really is. Regular trims keep your ends healthy and strong. At Sage Hair Studio, we offer a unique service with our haircuts called an internal split end trim. This specialized trim allows your stylist to carefully target and remove split ends that have traveled higher than your perimeter length. By trimming these split ends before they can travel further up the hair shaft, we help keep your hair looking healthier, shinier, and softer. Over the next 3–6 months, you’ll notice your hair feeling thicker and more resilient, as this technique prevents further damage and encourages growth.

5. Avoid Heat, Tight Styles, and Protect Your Hair at Night
Excessive heat styling and tight ponytails or braids can cause breakage and stunt growth. Try air-drying when you can, and always use a heat protectant when you do use heat styling tools. For hairstyles, choose looser, more relaxed styles to avoid unnecessary tension on the hair shaft. Nighttime hair care is just as important. Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase can cause friction, leading to frizz and breakage. Silk or satin pillowcases reduce friction, keeping your hair smooth and preventing unnecessary damage while you sleep. They also help to retain moisture in your hair, giving you healthier-looking locks by morning. When it comes to ponytail holders, choose gentle, fabric-covered elastic bands instead of rubber bands that can tug on your hair and cause breakage. Opt for styles that don’t pull too tightly at the roots, as this can weaken the hair over time. Also, avoid sleeping with wet hair. While it might be tempting to hop into bed with damp strands, doing so can lead to scalp problems like fungal growth or dandruff. The moisture on your scalp can create an environment where bacteria thrive, leading to irritation and weakened hair follicles. Try to let your hair air-dry a bit before bed, or at least give it a quick dry with a blow dryer to prevent scalp issues.

6. Choose Products That Support Growth
Look for shampoos, conditioners, and treatments made with ingredients like biotin, keratin, castor oil, and natural seed oils—such as pumpkin seed, flaxseed, and black cumin seed oil. These seed oils are packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and fatty acids that nourish the scalp, reduce inflammation, and support hair growth. They're often found in serums and scalp treatments and can be a powerful, natural addition to your hair care routine. Also, avoid products with heavy silicones or harsh sulfates that can weigh your hair down or cause dryness over time. The right products can make a big difference, so it’s worth checking the label and choosing formulas that actually support your hair’s health.

7. Be Patient (But Stay Consistent)
Hair typically grows about half an inch per month, so results won’t happen overnight—but consistency is key. Stick to a healthy routine, take care of your scalp, and give your hair the love it needs. With time and the right care, you’ll start seeing the difference.

Final Thoughts
Growing your hair out takes time, but every small step makes a difference. At Sage Hair Studio, we’re here to help you through every stage of your hair journey. Whether you need a growth-boosting scalp treatment or a simple trim to keep your ends in shape, we’ve got you covered.
